oh wow, I have so many new followers. I should check this thing more often.

I’m still too busy with school to start any new sewing projects, unfortunately, but I’ll definitely have more time this winter break. I’m thinking of making something simple next time…like a light purse.

I haven’t updated in a long time, I know. Life has been very hectic since school started…last fall. I’m going to Italy in May, but when I get back in June, I’ll be ready to start sewing and uploading tutorials again.

I’ve never made a pair of shorts before so I’ve been a lil apprehensive…hence the month long procrastination. I’m finally ready, though! a tutorial will be up shortly.

text How to Make a Vest - Part 2

Now that the ‘front’ and ‘side front’ pieces have been interfaced and stitched together, it’s time to add the ‘welting’ pieces.
- Take the approx. 2.5 x 5 in. piece and fold in half lengthwise. Stitch ends in a 3/8” (1cm) seam but leave top half open.
- Turn ‘welt’ right side out; press with an iron to flatten it out and define edges.
- Pin ‘welt’ to the front and stitch in place.
Next, you need to use the original paper pattern pieces to pin and cut out lining pieces, just like the fabric pieces in part 1. The lining pieces will be the inside of your fabric. I used satin because I think it looks nice but WARNING, satin is hard to work with since it rips and tears easily. After the ‘front’ and ‘side front’ lining pieces are cut out, stitch them together like you did the fabric pieces earlier, making sure the shiny/right sides are facing each other. Here is what the stitched together lining pieces should look like:
With RIGHT sides facing each other, pin the lining to the front, matching seams and raw edges evenly. note: I made the mistake of pinning the WRONG side of the lining to the RIGHT of the front. So ignore the picture and pin the lining so that the WRONG side is facing out and the RIGHT side (shiny side) is facing the front.
- Stitch ONLY along the neck, front, and lower edges—leaving the sides and some of the neck area unpinned so you can flip the vest right side out once it’s sewn together.
- Flip vest right side out. it should look like this:
  
  note: since I didn’t pin the lining correctly, the WRONG side is facing outward…when the RIGHT side (shiny side) should be. I would have corrected this but the satin started to tear when I tried to rip the seams out so I just left it this way. not a big deal, no one will see this part of the vest.
Press and fold under raw edges at the top of the neck line. stitch pressed edges together.
Press edges with hot iron.
Now take the two ‘tie end’ pieces and fold them in half lengthwise. Stitch in 3/8” seam, leaving one end open.
turn ‘tie end’ right side out; press with hot iron.
- take the ‘back’ piece and use the pattern to mark where the ties should go. Pin and then stitch ties into place.
Take the ‘back’ and ‘side back’ lining and stitch together (match notches). Next, pin lining to fabric. RIGHT sides facing each other. Stitch and turn inside out.
Match notches from the front and back side pieces. Pin and stitch together. Press with hot iron.
Finally, use paper pattern or approximate where you want buttons holes and buttons to go. Mark with white pencil. Sew on buttons.
- You can use a machine to make your button holes, but I made them by hand. To do this, use scissors to cut your holes, then simply use a thread and needle to ‘loop’ around and cover the raw edges.
